Almost 11.000 Europeans live in Abidjan, the former capital city of the Ivory Coast (Côte d`Ivoir). It is remarkable for Europeans to live here because for more than seven years the West African state has had strong political conflicts. In 2004, white people had to be evacuated by their governments because President Laurent Gbagbo was appealing to the public to be against them. Despite that many white inhabitants returned or never left. Today the situation has become much more stable, and many Europeans have managed to live and work here, a city that was one of the most economically and culturally developed places of West Africa many years ago. Torben Schmidt met some of them and discovered for their motivation for living in Abidjan.
